” Effect of Situational Interest and Social Support on College Students’ Physical Activity Motivation: A Mixed Methods Analysis “

Due to the fact that approximately half of the youth ages 12 to 21 do not meet the recommended amount of Physical activity. Even more disturbing, a survey across 124 higher education institutions revealed that 53% of students were not meeting the requirement either. This illuminates the question of what really gets people moving? If education of the dangers of the sedentary lifestyle isn’t enough to motivate such a terrifying percentage of our youthful population, what is it that gets the other half moving? This study was conducted to ask just that, and explore the motivating factors that influence our young people. This article utilized multiple methods to analyse reason young adult decide to partake in physical activity. They a mix of quantitative and qualitative data.

They used 82 student surveys and interview 8 students to get a deeper perceptive of the source of interests. They first broke the word interest into two different types: Personal, and Situational Interest. Personal interest is internal while Situational in more environmental. Situational can be further broken down into enjoyment, novelty, exploration intention, and attention demand. They used Tennis as the activity of focus due to the fact that it requires two players, ” which resonates with interest theory, which emphasizes the importance of social support and its influence on situational interest”1. The results of the study relieved that interest sources were significantly rooted in the multitude of situational interests, which are heavily influences by social situations thus illuminating the importance and value of social support.
